Moorish Castle
On
one of the sides of the romantic Mountain range of
Sintra
you have the Moorish Castle. This was built by the Muslim during the 8th
and 9th century for the defence of the territory in quarrel with the
Christians. This dispute went on until the 12th century.
Little time after the re - Conquer of Lisbon by the king
Afonso
Henriques,
in 1147 the Muslim that inhabited the Castle surrendered without
resistance
On a pacific territory and a consolidated Portuguese Kingdom, in the
15th century the military blockhouse looses its importance and it is
abandoned. This fact started a degradation process of the entire Castle.
The King Fernando II found it in a ruin state and in 1840 it was given
to Sintra
City hall in the condition that it would be restored to be used as
public stroll and kept opened to the population.
In 1994 the Moorish Castle transited for the guardianship of the Nature
Preservation Institute- Sintra-Cascais Natural
Park- and kept that management until July 2000.
