São Pedro de Penaferrim
Church
It is
about two km away from the historic centre of the Village of
Sintra.
Despite the origins are not known, it is believed that it was built
around the 16th century to replace the Castle’s Chapel.
It needed to be rebuilt after the 1531 and the 1755 earthquakes.
Despite the catastrophe, you may still find some structures from the
medieval époque such as the gothic apse sustained by four abutments and
a statue inside the church made of Açã’s stone, about 75 cm high that
it’s believed to have com from the Castle’s Church.
The main door and the wall tiles of the interior of the church that
report life of Saint Peter are from the 18th century.
In the main chapel the vault has crossed
ribbing and
retable
is simple made of white and golden wood.
